Burgertime NJ opens with over the top burgers and dogs

Chef Dane DeMarco made a name for himself specializing in fantastic, over-the-top burgers and hotdogs at Philadelphia bars like American Sardine Bar, South Philly Tap Room, and the Second District before joining the group that owns Hawthornes, Sonnys Cocktail Bar, and Wine. Diving.

Now 34, they opened their own restaurant called Burgertime NJ with the help of their sister Dannette Monoyios. It’s not a bar scene, it’s just an old-fashioned counter setup replacing a short-lived taqueria at 123 Merchant St. in downtown Audubon, NJ, near his home. (DeMarco continues to help out at Philadelphia restaurants.)

In addition to burgers and hot dogs—and you haven’t lived until you’ve had the Sabrett hot dog topped with creamy peanut butter and crispy Frito’s corn chips on a Liscio’s bun—DeMarco sells funnel cake, fried pickles, grilled cheese sandwiches , floats made with soft serve ice cream and your all-time favorite fountain drink, RC Cola.

No fries. Everybody does them. DeMarco likes tots, in all their crunch, and adds creative toppings, like a sunny side up egg and breakfast meats, and bacon, pizza cheese, jalapenos and ranch dressing.

Almost everything on the menu can be made vegetarian, and most vegetarian items can be vegan. Many items are also gluten-free, and a second fryer is on the way.

The Down Under Burger is a tribute to Outback Steakhouse with blue cheese, bacon, onion petals, A1 sauce and “flower sauce”. The Francis Bean Hot Dog has baked beans, bacon, mustard, and chopped onions. DeMarco, whose father is South Jersey banquet chef Benjamin “Benzo” DeMarco, started in the business at age 14 working on the phones at Gaetano’s in Willingboro and worked there for a dozen years. One night, Gaetano’s was short-staffed, so DeMarco was recruited to work the line. They loved the rhythm.

At Burgertime, you order at the counter, which seats seven. DeMarco said people can be funny by giving their name to pick up food, so they hand out a plastic-wrapped baseball card. You can be “Mike Schmidt” for a few minutes until your name is called.

Hours are 11 am to 8 pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 11 am to 10 pm Friday and Saturday.

Audubon, just off White Horse Pike, is packed with food businesses like the new LesbiVeggies and Brown Dog Cafe, as well as Red White & Brew Beer Co., Smoke BBQ, Angelo’s Pizza, Cousins ​​Deli and Desserts by Design.
