It makes sense that one of the top-rated recipes by Food Network star Ree Drummond’s fans on the culinary channel’s website is their Chicken Fried Steak. After all, she is the wife of a cattle rancher who knows how to turn the classic dish into a superstar dinner.
Here’s the recipe that Drummond has earned hundreds of happy fan reviews that she says she makes for her husband Ladd, aka Marlboro Man, “because I like it.”
Drummond says her husband is a big fan of her fried chicken fillet
On her blog Pioneer Woman, which launched the television personality’s career, Drummond revealed that the dish is near and dear to the heart of her husband Ladd. Considering Ladd is a rancher, Chicken Fried Steak as one of his favorites makes perfect sense.
Drummond writes that she prepares the recipe for her husband as a gift: “There is nothing special about this dish, except that it is a total miracle. It’s fried chicken fillet, it is what it is. I did it for Marlboro Man last night because I like it, because he took me all over Kingdom Come this weekend, because he stopped at a gas station each of the 4,322 times I asked him to do it because he kept drinking iced coffees (TMI? ?), and because I like it. I think I’ll keep it. Make it for someone you like! And he plans to keep it. “
How to Make Ree Drummond’s Fried Chicken Steak
In the Food Network video for this recipe, Drummond notes that “Here on the ranch, I can say without question that there is nothing more cowboy-friendly than Chicken Fried Steak. While we don’t eat [this dish] every day, now is the time that they really need something to stick to their ribs. “
Drummond also explained the unusual name of the recipe: “The reason it’s called Chicken Fried Steak is that it has a breading that resembles fried chicken. It is a bit confusing for people who are not familiar with the dish. They want to know where the chicken is. ” The full recipe, video, and reviews can be found on the Food Network site.
The cubed steak is seasoned with salt and pepper, dredged in flour seasoned with cayenne pepper, paprika, and salt, and then topped with an egg-milk mixture. Once it is “heavily breaded”, it is placed in a skillet with half a cup of vegetable oil. Drummond notes that each steak should be cooked for “about two to two and a half minutes per side until nice and golden.”
A velvety sauce consisting of flour, whole milk (“Whole milk, please; you can’t make sauce with skim milk, guys, sorry”), salt and pepper is whipped in the skillet in which the steaks were prepared. ” Basically, you want to add enough flour to the pan so that the mixture is more of a paste and doesn’t have that greasy, oily look, “said the Pioneer woman star explained. The “bits of flavor that were at the bottom of the pan” give the sauce its delight.
Drummond’s Fried Chicken Steak Is A Hit On The Food Network Website
With nearly 400 multi-star reviews, the Food Network star’s recipe is one of the most rated by fans on the site.
While the steak itself is a comfort food masterpiece, many fans were particularly in love with the cook’s sauce.
“I made this tonight and my gosh it was so good, I was a little hesitant about the sauce, but that was almost the best part of the entire meal,” said one home cook.
Another fan added: “It doesn’t have a ton of complex flavors, but when you get that sauce, it’s perfect!”
