The Grand Strand has its share of fast food restaurants specializing in fried chicken, so it would be difficult to bring an original concept to the market.

However, Barrie Nadi and her son Joseph opened a new fast food restaurant on December 15 on South Kings Highway that has some specific homemade processes and items for their new restaurant, Prime Chicken.

The Myrtle Beach restaurant pressure-fries chicken and pork ribs; uses a proprietary breading that does not include breadcrumbs; makes homemade buttermilk cookies every 15 minutes; and has a number of other homemade products.

The menu may be familiar to New York and New Jersey diners. Barrie Nadi sold them to Texas chicken restaurants in those states, eventually building 18 locations at their peak before being sold off-chain.

Top-notch chicken tenders

The restaurant does not use breadcrumbs or breadcrumbs. The chicken and ribs are marinated at least 12 hours overnight and then lightly coated with a flour-based seasoning called Texas Breading.

All fried foods are cooked in liquid soybean oil in pressure cookers, not open fryers, and Nadi believes the method provides more consistency. He also believes that breadcrumbs contain oil and can make chicken fattier.

Barrie Nadi and her family have been making their Texas Bread since 1978 in a factory in New Jersey, which is run by another of Nadi’s sons, Giorgio. The breading is sold to other restaurants, primarily in the Northeast, as well as to online consumers.

Nadi said her meats are purchased from Prestige Farms in Murrells Inlet and are never frozen.

Two chicken sandwiches can be ordered with either spicy or mild brioche buns. There is also a grilled pressed chicken panini sandwich with cilantro pasta.

Prime also offers a salad with a selection of toppings, sides (such as mashed potatoes with gravy, macaroni and cheese, and homemade fruit tarts), and a homemade garlic mayo sauce for dipping.

Prime brews their own sweet and unsweetened iced tea. Three mixed drinks at the restaurant are a grape punch, an orange punch, and a virgin coconut colada.

Opening in Myrtle Beach

Barrie and Joseph Nadi moved to Myrtle Beach from New York City about 10 years ago. Joseph graduated from Socastee High and Barrie opened and operated the French fine-dining steakhouse Ocean 17 between 2011 and 2013 on Restaurant Row.

Barrie Nadi sold a sweet potato chip factory in North Carolina, as well as his chicken restaurants in Texas, and decided to get back into the restaurant business after a short break.

The Prime Chicken building at 23rd Ave. South on South Kings Highway previously housed a Bojangles. The building has been renovated with new electrical and plumbing systems and wifi. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating.

“My goal is to give people something different. It’s more of an open atmosphere, ”Nadi said. “Why do you have to look like a greasy chicken coop?”

The Nadis say Prime Chicken has been well received by regulars in its first few weeks. “We’ve found that people really like the taste,” said Joseph.

They already have a second Prime Chicken planned further north in Myrtle Beach, and they hope to expand further.
