Mongolian barbecue venue closes after 28 years, plus other Bay Area restaurant closures in December

As part of our ongoing report on local restaurant closings, here is a list of Bay Area establishments that have closed or will be closing at the end of December 2021 (one establishment will be closing on January 1). Notable shutters include the Hong Kong-style Richmond district’s Ken Kee Cafe restaurant, El Camino de Santa Clara Mongolian steakhouse, and the Lafayette Millie’s Kitchen breakfast mainstay. See the list of November closings here.

Santa clara’s favorite The Mongolian BBQ Way it closed on December 15 after a decades-long run. SFGATE first reported the closure (SFGATE and The San Francisco Chronicle are owned by Hearst but operate independently). Owners John and Sunny Seo cited the financial downturn from the pandemic as the reason behind the closure. The couple plan to return to their native South Korea and hope that someone else will reopen the establishment. The restaurant had been around since 1993, but changed hands a few times before the Seos took it over in 2005. The barbecue spot was known for its noodle bowls and crispy egg rolls.

San Francisco Richmond District Restaurant Ken Kee Cafe it will close definitively on December 31st. The owners put up a sign informing customers about the closure it prevents. Diners frequented the restaurant for its Hong Kong-style comfort food such as baked rice and noodle dishes with pork chops and fun chow chow.
