From opening gifts on Christmas Eve to looking for the pickle on the Christmas tree, Onslow residents have a variety of traditions that bring Christmas magic into their homes.

Today, Christmas Eve, many families will start the festivities to varying degrees throughout the day, as many Onslow residents have both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day traditions.

Jacksonville City Manager Richard Woodruff said his Christmas traditions include reading The Christmas Story on Christmas Eve and watching The Polar Express on Christmas Day.

“Everybody has a tradition or a looming one, whether they know it or not,” said Stacey Winegardner, a Jacksonville resident.

Onslow resident Anita Selby loves to set up her Christmas village every winter, a tradition her mother started many years ago.

Winegardner said her family has always made new pajamas on Christmas Eve and buys a new ornament each year for each child.

“When our kids were little, and Santa’s excitement was just too much to bear,” Winegardner said, “we started making snack dinners and watching as many Christmas cartoons as it took to make them pass out so we could put them to bed and Santa could visit our house. House “.
