PUCHONG, January 3 – With the new year, everyone is restarting their diets. A friend has signed up for Veganuary. Another is talking about the water fast.

It’s a good time to eat clean after all the year-end treats. And of course it’s a much-needed break before the party kicks off again with the Chinese New Year.

You can opt for a meatless meal from time to time. Maybe just once a week, if you’re not willing to do your best.

I discovered MyEfy Muslim Vegetarian Foods through a friend who is a vegetarian and was raving about their vegetarian “nasi kandar”. As the dishes have a weekly rotation, I had to wait a while to try their famous “nasi kandar”.

The place is run by Effiza Ab Rahman or Kak Effi, who cook local dishes like “nasi lemak” or “asam pedas” with fake meats. It is also suitable for vegans, as the food is prepared without eggs, butter, onion or garlic. She uses coconut milk for the curry, therefore it is dairy free. Since she is also a strict vegetarian, all the dishes she cooks are meat-free.

Every week a different dish is offered to satisfy your cravings like this delicious 'nasi tomato'.

The “nasi kandar” was worth the long wait. You get plain rice combined with vegetarian “lamb” cook black, vegetarian “chicken” curry and sauteed cabbage cooked in spices. It’s RM17 for the set.

The highlight is the vegetarian “lamb”. cook black. The thick, dark sauce is packed with spices that will allow you to finish your rice in no time. Even the texture of the fake meat that is made from mushrooms looks a lot like the slightly rough bite of lamb. As Kak Effi says, you can definitely eat this “meat” even if you have health problems.

Mix the thick sauce with the vegetarian “chicken” curry which has a milder spicy flavor. You get a piece of fake meat cut up to look like a chicken thigh. Even meat when you bite into it tastes like chicken, as it has a similar softer texture. This imitation meat is made from soybeans to look like chicken.

When I prepared my food and showed it to my friends, most of them thought I was having a real Nasi Kandar food with meat.

I also tried the “nasi tomato” for RM18. This set came with basmati rice, a vegetarian “lamb”. setting, vegetarian “chicken” red cook and pickles.

The light, fluffy rice grains were packed with flavor thanks to the use of spices and a mix of fresh tomatoes and tomato paste. I liked the mild taste of the “lamb” setting that goes well with the tasty red cook “chicken.” To one side, it has lightly pickled cabbage, cucumber, and tomato that helped cut through the richness of the meal.

Although the sets are designed for a single person, it is substantial enough for two meals if you are a small eater.

Keep an eye out for other dishes like their “nasi ambeng”, “nasi padang” and so on. Orders open every week. It is available every weekend for lunch. She will send the menu for the week via WhatsApp or you can check her Facebook page for updates. Just order one day in advance. You can pick up the food from your store or have it delivered through a third-party delivery company.

There are also a variety of egg-free baked goods such as cakes and breads from Kak Effi’s bakery. Some may be available by pre-order, so check with her first.
