New Bern NC’s Ghent sandwich shop serves charity dinners

Through their local plate of hot burgers, Ghent Sandwich Shop owners Greg and Sandra Collins are serving the needs of the community.

Starting in January, Ghent Sandwich Shop will kick off its ninth year of fundraising Nights with hot burger plates. In the past eight years, they have raised thousands of dollars for needy families and charities. Of the money raised, The Collins generously offer no less than 80% of the proceeds and receive no more than 20% to cover their overhead.

The amount raised during the dinners is quite large depending on the benefit, between $ 100 and $ 5,000. Throughout the eight years, Collins hosted dinners for breast cancer awareness organizations, veterans, and local high schools. In addition to that, Ghent offers an “advance payment” program for the New Bern police and fire departments.

This week, Collins partnered with VFW Post 2514 in New Bern to collect and deliver tornado relief supplies to Murray, Kentucky.

To begin serving the needs of the community, Sandra Collins explained that it started with a current NFL player from New Bern High School.

Ghent Sandwich Shop began offering hot burger dinners one night a month in 2012. Sandra Collins said it was a creative way to make more money for the restaurant.
