As a percentage this seems small, but the sheer number of McDonald’s restaurants means that McPlant is still offered in at least eight locations in Leeds, a city in the north of England. The number of KFCs selling their vegan chicken burger is much more limited, with only two KFC locations in Leeds selling it.

But I managed to get my hands on one of each and compared them.

Both came in packages specifically designed for that product. KFC was more eye-catching with its big, bold text, and I liked the wording. For its McPlant box, McDonald’s opted for typical vegetarian product packaging, with shades of green and a leafy image.

When opening the boxes, the burgers were noticeably different. KFC’s Vegan Burger is similar to their chicken sandwich, with a slightly more oval-shaped bun and a large plant-based Quorn steak, also oval-shaped, protruding from the bun. The McPlant is more similar to a cheeseburger, with a round, plant-based beef patty and vegan cheese.

The Quorn filet was delicious. It tasted and looked like chicken, and had a texture to match. The steak was topped with KFC’s famous blend of 11 herbs and spices, making it virtually indistinguishable from regular KFC chicken.

In the end, I thought both burgers tasted great, with the main difference being that one was made to mimic a chicken burger and the other a cheeseburger. They both did a great job of replicating both the flavor and texture of the meat.

As for McPlant, it tasted great, but with more and more restaurants offering similar vegan cheeseburgers, I’m not sure how much their offering stands out. As a replica of a standard cheeseburger, it was excellent, but many fast food chains offer them. The McPlant would need something special beyond its low price to set it apart. However, partnering with a big-name brand like Beyond Meat is a great place to start and paves the way for McDonald’s to improve its vegan offerings in the future.
